Description

Addressing Women’s Use of Violence

A virtual training on effective interventions and programs that address women’s use of violence
May 5-7, 2026
9 am – 4 pm Central time each day

Training Description

Since the implementation of mandatory arrest policies, communities and advocacy programs across the country have been working to refine interventions and programming to address women’s use of force – especially when they have also been victims of ongoing coercive controlling violence. These questions include:

  • Are the women who are being arrested and/or court-ordered to nonviolence programs battering their partners, using resistive violence, or using legal self-defense?
  • Do our local criminal legal system agencies have a differentiated response or are all cases of domestic violence treated the same?
  • What are most effective interventions that address the violence women experience and the violence they use?

This 3-day training provides an overview of The Duluth Model’s approach to addressing women’s use of violence, including programming that addresses women’s use of violence within a Coordinated Community Response (CCR).

  • Days 1 & 2 will explore the underlying assumptions of Turning PointsA Nonviolence Curriculum for Women and how the curriculum helps women understand the connections between the violence they experience and the violence they use.
  • Day 3 will focus on how to leverage your CCR to reduce the arrest rates of domestic violence survivors and minimize the consequences of arrest that can embolden the abuser.

Who will benefit from this training?

Anyone who works with women who use violence against their intimate partners will benefit from this training, particularly nonviolence group facilitators, probation officers, therapists, and community-based advocates.
